It also includes plans for power generation of up to 1,000 megawatts, some of which could serve needs beyond the refinery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Ruto said the project would create employment, promote local industries and reduce Africa\u2019s dependence on imported refined petroleum products. He argued that African countries should process more of their own raw materials instead of exporting crude oil and importing finished products at higher costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the project has faced opposition from some Lamu residents over land ownership, compensation, environmental protection and public participation. Some residents have filed a case at the Malindi Environment and Land Court, seeking compensation and raising concerns about the project\u2019s impact on their community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The court ordered that the status quo be maintained on the disputed land pending a hearing scheduled for October 14. The dispute has raised questions about how the project will proceed while the legal concerns are being addressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the ceremony, President Ruto assured residents that their rights would be protected and that land disputes would be handled lawfully. He also said environmental and social safeguards would be enforced during construction and operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dangote said he was prepared to address genuine concerns but warned against attempts to obstruct the project.
