A 23 year-old man suspected of killing an 18-year-old schoolgirl in Molo, Nakuru County, has been detained for 21 days as police continue with investigations.
The suspect, Walter Kipkoech, appeared before Molo Resident Magistrate Christine Mugo, where investigators requested more time to complete their inquiry into the death of Joy Wangui.
Police told the court that the additional detention period will allow them to conduct a DNA examination, complete the post-mortem process and carry out a mental health assessment of the suspect.
The prosecution argued that releasing the suspect could put his safety at risk, as members of the public were reportedly demanding that he face justice over the alleged offence.

According to information presented in court, the victim’s family discovered something was wrong after her brother returned home and found the situation unusual. The matter was subsequently reported to police, who began processing the scene and gathering evidence.
Investigators also recovered items believed to be relevant to the case and are using forensic evidence to establish what happened.Police say they are continuing to interview witnesses and examine evidence as they work to establish the circumstances surrounding the girl’s death.
The suspect will remain in custody at Molo Police Station for 21 days and is expected to return to court on October 27, 2026, when he will be presented for plea-taking.
